Ichigo Kurosaki, a high school student who can see ghosts, one day meets a girl named Rukia Kuchiki, who calls herself a “Shinigami” (Soul Reaper). She tells him that the job of a Shinigami is to soul bury, or help spirits find peace, which are called “Hollows”. However, he initially couldn’t believe in the existence of Shinigami.
When Ichigo’s family is attacked by a Hollow, he is forced to believe. Not wanting to involve his family in the turmoil any further, Ichigo confronts the Hollow. But, being just a high school student, he stands no chance, and Rukia, who shielded Ichigo, is seriously injured.
Judging that they would die in this situation, Rukia transfers some of her Shinigami powers to Ichigo, turning him into a Shinigami, and he is able to defeat the Hollow.
However, Ichigo takes more of Rukia’s Shinigami powers than she imagined, and Rukia loses most of her powers. Therefore, Rukia asks him to do the Shinigami’s job in her place, and thus begins Ichigo’s activities as a “Substitute Shinigami”.

Ichigo Kurosaki The protagonist of this work. At first glance, he seems like an ordinary high school student who could be found anywhere, but he has an exceptionally strong spiritual sense.
